Music
Through our music lessons we aim to inspire and motivate children to express themselves in a unique way. Opportunities are provided for children to create, play, perform and enjoy music; all of these activities are recognised as encouraging pupil’s personal development.
The aims of teaching music are to:
- Know and understand how sounds are made and then organised into musical structures;
- Know how music is made through a variety of instruments;
- Know how music is composed and written down;
- Know how music is influenced by the time, place, purpose for which it was written;
- Develop the interrelated skills of performing, composing and appreciating music.
Singing lies at the heart of good music teaching and our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to sing in tune and with other people – learning about the structure and organisation of music as they sing. Children are taught to listen and appreciate different forms of music, with an expectation of them being able to maintain their concentration for longer and listen to more extended pieces of music as they get older.
Our school uses a combination of Music Express and the LCP scheme as the basis for curriculum planning. Staff recognise children have widely differing music abilities and plan accordingly. Opportunities are also provided for pupils to study a musical instrument with peripatetic teachers.
